Field Trip Friday…Tide Pools!

Field Trip Fridays is an ongoing post documenting the free or cheap excursions our family takes in Santa Cruz and the greater Bay Area.  Visit each week to read about our family adventure, and by all means, leave your suggestions for field trips in the comments below.

Friday capped off a nice warm streak of fall weather and that, combined with a negative tide, equaled tide pooling with the kids!  What a glorious afternoon of poking around for hermit crabs, sea anemones and other surprises.  Long after the early evening chill began to set in, my kids were busy collecting rocks, shells, seaweed, sea snails…

It was definitely one of those days that makes me feel so appreciative of where we live.  Santa Cruz was definitely at its best…Everyone waved and chatted with strangers, people pet dogs that weren’t theirs, kids shared their discoveries with each other, surfers caught decent waves, paddleboarders cruised around, and the sunset was absolutely pink and gorgeous!  If you are in Santa Cruz, there are many local tide pool spots- we love Pleasure Point. I highly recommend checking the tide charts and following when there will be exceptionally low tides…grab a bucket and shovel and go exploring with your kids!

Super fun, there is nothing better then a trip into nature to bring out the curiosity in kids and to let them really focus on one thing for a long time that isn't a video game or a television show. Well done. I'll def try to come up with some field trip ideas.

What's so great about visiting tide pools is they keep changing and offering new things to see.
The tide, time of day and seasons all make for a different experience each time.
I hope you go often and take an old Grandpa with you sometime……d
