Rainy Day Project- Clothes for Stuffed Animals

by Christine@TheAums on February 26, 2011 · 3 comments

We might be vacationing in a warm, sunny state, but back home stormy weather means it’s a good time for another Rainy Day project!

First, a warning: I’ve seen some impressive Do-It-Yourself sites with detailed tutorials on a particular sewing project. This is not one of those.

Recently, the Aumies asked, “Mama, can you sew clothes for our stuffed animals?”  Now, my Aumies actually make really good use of their stuffed animal collection as I find them everywhere in the house and car.  If you can imagine 4 kids’ worth of stuffed animals collected over the years, it amounts to waaaaay too many.  Yet, they play with them all, all the time.  I’ve been looking for ways to store and display them, but the only thing that’s worked so far is to narrow down the collection and switch it up every couple of months.

*Mama tip: I let each child choose their 2 favorite-of-the-moment animals and bag up the rest, to be released to unsuspecting “bored” children on a day when I could use the diversion to entertain them.*
**Mama tip UPDATE: Yeah, that never quite worked as planned.**

So it seems my Aumies can detect my moments of doubt and have learned ways around them.  When I hesitated to answer whether or not we could make clothes for stuffed animals because really, how in the heck do you make small, oddly-shaped garments?!, my daughter chimed in, “Mama, you’re a good sewer.” Ahhh, the power of yes kicked in!

So here’s what you’ll need: a sewing machine, scraps of material, and a child making difficult requests like, “Mama, can you make footie pajamas for my monkey?”

I sloppily traced the rough shape of the animal and remembered to make it bigger than actual size to account for seams.  I also made sure there was enough cloth to make a front and back.
Then I literally spent minutes sewing the two pieces together, estimating where the holes for appendages had to be, and praying that it would slip on the animal and resemble whichever outfit was requested.
Can you make my penguin a dress?
Can you make my frog a shirt? (It ended up fitting the bear better.)
Can you believe it…footie pajamas for a monkey!!!
The end results are not perfect but better than I imagined, and evidence of some quality time spent with my Aumies. While I had the sewing machine out, I also let my 6 year-old son make a pillow for his stuffed animal.
A pillow is a perfect first sewing project.
Good night, Mr. Monkey!

Love when kids sew and make things for themselves, particularly boys. They are so proud of their work.

Ditto! My son is loving weaving, embroidery, and sewing and I think his strong fine motor skills have helped his penmanship and drawing skills…win win!
