Attn: All Mothers Exempt from Giving Mother’s Day Gifts, I Wish

by Christine@TheAums on April 30, 2011 · 9 comments

I literally fell asleep while writing this last night! Can you guess why?

I woke up this morning. Actually, it’s more like I went to bed this morning because yes, I did stay awake for the Royal Wedding! I know, you’re probably wondering, “Why in the heck would a mother of 4, who desperately needs every second of sleep she can get, stay up to watch something she can YouTube later?” Shoot…just to prove that I can! No, seriously, I knew my mom would be up all night watching, just as she did 30 years ago with Princess Di, so I wanted to join her “in spirit” and carry on the tradition. Awww…
In fact, today’s post is dedicated to my mom because, as I was saying, I woke up this morning…
and thought, “CRAP! Mother’s Day is like a week a way!” I don’t want to sound like a horrible daughter, but as much as I love my mom and am thankful for her, now that I’m a mom, a small part of me wishes that all mothers could be exempt from having to do anything for their mothers on Mother’s Day…and their husband’s mothers while I’m at it. Like, since we’re all in the same club, couldn’t we just enjoy the day and take that obligation off our to-do lists? And not have moments like, “CRAP! Mother’s Day is like a week away! What am I gonna do?!”
I’m not as bah-humbug as you might think. My Mother’s Day tradition for all the mothers in my life, which includes my own, my MIL, and Great-Nana, is to make my annual Shutterfly photo book. Since I like to give myself about half a year ample time to accomplish these things, the 2011 photo book only covers pictures taken in 2010. Anyway, it works for me. At least it has for a few years now, until this morning when I was all, ”CRAP! Mother’s Day is like a week away!” And now, I realize that there is no possible way I can create a spectacular photo book and have it sent in one week. So…I guess, Ma, if you’re reading this, hoping you’ll cut me some slack, as a fellow mother, and anticipate your Mother’s Day gift oh, let’s say in a few weeks by the 4th of July…just to be safe.

While I’m on the topic of Mother’s Day, I want to share with you a gift idea, and by you, I mean my husband and kids all the kids and dads who read my blog and need to give their mamas/wives something she’ll love. Look guys, you only have a week to get this done, so get moving because giving a late Mother’s Day present is just tacky and inexcusable! Are you ready? This is a gem and I personally know that it can be made quickly and easily because I made it for my husband for Father’s Day two years ago and my baby, Aumie #4, was only 2 or 3 WEEKS old at the time! So, if I could do it post-partum…
What you’re gonna do is give your child/ren a letter and take their picture holding it while looking super cute. In the end, you’ll have spelled either what they call their mother, or any message you can think of. Also, if you run out of time to buy a frame, let her know that you’ll watch the kids while she goes frame shopping and gets that pedicure/drink/facial she deserves. This works for anybody with any number of kids…

*I’m thinking of doing one for Nana with each Aumie holding up the N-A-N-A.
*Get creative, and add your pets to the mix!
*If you only have 1 child, let them do a different outfit/pose/background for each letter.
*If you have 3, go with M-O-M
*If you have 6, go with MOTHER
**And if you have 19 like the Duggars, go with a phrase, like ‘HAPPY MOTHERS DAY MAMA!”

So, to recap, this is what I want for Mother’s Day…along with that pedicure/drink/facial.

I love this! And I have to tell you…. a few years ago we decided not to exchange gifts any more among the adults for birthdays and holidays- and instead save that money and go on vacation (or as you call it- obli-cation) together as a family. It just seemed crazy all of that running around and buying gifts for each other that many times ended up being more clutter in each other's houses- when really the gift of being together is the greatest gift of all!

Oh, Sharon, I'm all for gift-giving when I have my life in order which is never, so really I'm completely against it and definitely am in favor of your family's set up. Swapping gifts for a vacation is a great idea! Giving me gift certs. for mani/pedi/facials also reduces the clutter in my house, lol!

That is a very cute idea. I think I might do that for my MIL because she goes by Nana. Thanks for the inspiration!

I specifically always ask for something "made" on Mother's Day. I would love to make this for my mom. Or even have Slasher make it for me.

My complicated relationship with my mom makes the day a bit of a nightmare, so if I send this I won't even have to call. Bonus!

@Jessica, Nana will love this, guaranteed! I'd love to see the finished product!
@Liz, I think the Kid would get into doing a different pose/outfit for each letter…do it! Or save it for Father's Day and have her dress as Jason, Freddy, etc…
