Motherhood, a Road Well-Traveled

Reflecting on Mother’s Day, below is what I wrote for a contest last Mother’s Day about what motherhood means to me. For some reason, I had the hardest time doing this with the allotted word limit. I didn’t win, but I was happy with what I wrote, so I’d like to share with you and wish you and/or your mama a Happy Day!

I gave birth to my children, but they gave me life! A life I wouldn’t trade for all the sleep, money, clean laundry, or date nights in the world. A life so filled with emotions, experiences, growth and change, that its meaning expands with each passing day and every milestone reached.

When I became a mother, I pledged to teach my kids everything they needed to know about this world and yet, I am the one learning from them day after day. The first lesson I learned was that a mother is unconditional love in-the-flesh. The second lesson…a mother loves every inch of her baby’s flesh! Who else could marvel forever at those teeny tiny toes and jellyrolls of skin? Who else could smell that new baby smell and get weak in the knees? Those wide toothless smiles and baby soft butts, does it get any better?

Time flies by so fast, every seasoned mom will tell you and new mom soon finds out. What a strange feeling it is to want them to stay small forever, but look so forward to watching them grow up.

Being a mother makes me laugh, cry, worry, and worry even more. I plan and organize, only to accept that things usually don’t go as planned and clutter rules our home. I rush to get the kids to doctors’ appointments on time, and treasure lazy afternoons of digging in the dirt. I know that “me” time is sometimes confined to five minutes alone in a dark and locked bathroom. I know that, cliche or not, raising children is universally the hardest, most important, and most fulfilling job in the world!

Motherhood, like all journeys, begins with a single step, only now you’re pushing a stroller.

On this Mother’s Day, I will definitely show off claim my Super Mom status: This is me wearing a backpack and Baby Bjourn while pushing a double stroller! I had to have one picture like this to look back on when I’m older and say, “Wow, what was I thinking?!”

Believe me, Stephanie, this was not a daily occurance…which is why I wanted a picture! Having four kids so close together made for some interesting and quite ridiculous scenarios!

I love thinking about motherhood as a journey, which is why I dig the end of this. My stroller days are long gone and I usually avoid being sentimental, but each new minute/day/month brings a new path and perspective. Motherhood blooms like a flower.

I can't believe you didn't win with this post. Motherhood is quite the journey and we do learn so much from our children. Hope you had a wonderful mother's day.

Great analogy, Liz…different seasons and cycles, nurture, nature, beauty…it's definitely a sentimental journey!

"What a strange feeling it is to want them to stay small forever, but look so forward to watching them grow up."

That says it beautifully! I can barely push one baby in a stroller and you've got 4! Way to go!

Just beautiful! No other love like mama love, and the love we get in return. You should've won the contest :)
