To Blog or To Sleep, That is the Question

As I see yet another Stream of Consciousness Sunday, Monday Listicles, Haiku Tuesday, Wordless Wednesday, Thoughtful Thursday, Fashion Friday pass me by…I feel weird. Apologetic. Guilty. I feel like an explanation is needed.

When I started my blog a year ago, I didn’t realize how much maintenance  and how little sleep a blog requires. Kinda like when you start a family.

Your blog, just like your child, has basic needs.

1. It needs to be fed, plain and simple. Without food, i.e. posts, your blog will die, although, it can go a long time without so much as a Wordless Wednesday. But to grow big and strong…it needs to eat fresh content regularly.

2. It needs to be properly clothed. I’m talking about design here. If you want your blog to reflect you, attract readers, or stand out in the crowd, it needs the right attire in the form of a killer header, color scheme, social media buttons, a catchy tagline, an About Me page, and oh, so much more! Plus, your blog may feel peer pressure and want to follow the latest trends in blog design, so be prepared to shell out time and money, unless you’re a DIYer, in which case…a lot more time.

3. It needs interaction. Even when basic needs are met, children will fail to thrive without human contact. Likewise, your blog needs readers and comments, at least every now and then, in order to succeed. By engaging with readers, your blog’s survival chances increase substantially, and doubly so when you take the time to read and comment on others.

4. It needs friends. In other words…link ups, guest posts, and blog hops. Every prompt I mention in the first paragraph above is a like a playdate for my blog. Putting your blog out there and making meaningful connections will help your blog branch out further in the world wide web and gain valuable social (media) skills.

5. It needs a rest. You know, so you can have time to tend to the other areas of your life and get some Zs. And your blog, just like your child, will fight going to bed at a decent hour, will beg for 10 more minutes over and over again because it knows you will cave in to finish a post. It will do all in its power to prevent you from getting a quality night’s sleep.

So, I ask you, can one sleep AND successfully meet your blog’s needs? How long can you go between posts without losing your blogging mojo?

P.S. This month is my first blogoversary! Yay…Happy Birthday to The Aums! I guess it makes sense that my blog is a Libra as I’m always trying to find the balance of fitting it into my life. Stay tuned for more pensive posts about how I’m not meeting my blog’s basic needs.

Oh how I love this post. Right now my blog feels more like a caged critter….. neglected but thought of often. And every day I open the door, shove some food inside, and slam it shut…. hoping that it will just take care of itself until I find the time to nurture it again. If only I wasn’t so damn tired all of the time!

Gosh, Sharon, from the looks and content of your blog you’d never know that’s how you felt, but I totally understand. At least you’re referring to your blog and not one of your kids, haha!

Happy 1st Mama AUM!!
You know I slept 7 hours combined in the last 72 hours. This is absurd. Blogging is joy, just like motherhood, but the return is not quite the same. We are all passionate about it. But then I see my husband in the morning as I go to bed and I can tell from a perspective of a person who is not involved in social media, HE THINK I AM MAD. and he has every right. At least he gets paid for his work, right?
And for the record, I think you are doing a splendid job with your baby blog. it is thriving and happy and healthy and we all adore it. But mopping is suffering due to it :)

Thank you…I can’t believe a whole year’s gone by! Also, can’t believe 7 hours of sleep in 3 days! Hope you weren’t just tweeting with the late night crew :) I made it to a year and I’m still gonna give it a go thanks to kind folks like you!

I don’t know how Moms handle blogs, because I have no children, but I feel all those things above. I’ll say this though – Scheduling posts is a blog saver :) Give it a try :)

Aleta…that is really good advice…thank you! I do hope to find my rhyme and rhythm with blogging and schedule more often to give myself a break.

If you love blogging, like I do, TAKE BREAKS! It’s important to not make it feel like drudgery and to make sure you’re living your life. I’ve gotten much better at writing in advance and schedule (but usually just the day before).

I will tell you that you need to keep up the practice of writing. Even if it’s just 5 minutes, 3 times a week with no images or anything, KEEP WRITING. Like anything, it takes practice.

So true, Fadra! It is so hard to get your writing groove back once you’ve let it go for too long. One reason why Stream of Consciousness Sunday is pure genius!

I love how you did this…a blog IS like a child! I started my blog “just for me”, so I think of that every time I’m spending too long in the bloggy world, and not getting enough sleep, when it starts to become “work”, I put it to the side. I want to enjoy it! I think I’ve found a pretty good balance, and hope you do too :)

I love blogging/writing! I love sleep! I love balance…and I’m gonna continue to seek and accept. Thanks, Jen!

Thanks, Mary! Yes, WWs are the best! Have you tried Haiku Tuesday w/ @mamaknowsitall? 17 syllables ain’t so bad either :)

**6. Just thought of another one: In order to be the best blogger or parent you can be, you need to take care of yourself and get some ME time.
