It Happened Underwater

by Christine@TheAums on November 17, 2011 · 23 comments

One of the highlights of my blogging career happened very early on when I participated in Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop, and Mama Kat herself chose my post as her favorite! It was a boost to my writing confidence for sure. The prompt then was “A Daycare Story,” which inspired me to write about falling in love with my husband. It Happened At Daycare is like the prequel to my post today which follows the prompt:

How did he pop the question?

Well, first, we flew cross country to Vero Beach, Florida, where Aj’s Nana and Grandpa live…on a golf course, of course. In my eyes, meeting the grandparents is an important step in a relationship, so I was honored that he’d want me to meet the elders of his family. Nevermind that I would find myself in what felt like a never-ending Seinfeld episode.

On the day we arrived, my husband took off immediately with his Grandpa to run errands, promising me he’d be back within a couple of hours. That left me and Nana to get to know each other and I was more than a little nervous. Turns out, Nana’s a talker. I don’t remember saying one word the entire time, just a lot of polite nods. At one point, I had a brilliant idea to go to the bathroom just to get a break. She talked through the door the entire time! I love Nana, but this was my first experience with her and I just wanted AJ to share it with me.

Well, a couple of hours soon turned into an entire day…

Unbeknownst to me, the “errands” they were running, were shopping for a ring! I don’t know exactly how many jewelers they visited, but it wasn’t until the very last ring in the very last  store, that Aj found what he was looking for. When I think back on how my husband and his Grandpa spent their day, bonding over his next big move in life, I kinda swoon. I also thank my lucky stars that my future husband had the good sense to ignore Grandpa’s advice which was to buy me the hugest diamond ring he could find on QVC.

Cutting to the chase…picture us in the Keys…the Florida Keys. Snorkeling…underwater snorkeling. I watch my husband dive deep down and reach for something tucked in some coral. Then, he swims up toward me holding what I finally make out to be a ring. At first, I was astounded to think he found it among the coral.

But then, he holds the ring up, points to himself and then me. I suddenly realize what is happening…my boyfriend is proposing to me! Popping the big question! The moment I’ve been waiting for my entire life!

Then it dawns on me that my big moment is happening underwater…while I’m wearing a snorkel mask. Despite the humor in this, I still tear up with happiness which causes my snorkel mask to fog up.

My husband’s mask, on the other hand, is slowly filling up with blood due to a nosebleed from diving down and up so fast.

We come up for air, remove our masks, and hug, all while I cry out, “Yes!” in the middle of the ocean.

And here we are eight years and four kids later…up to our eyeballs in the chaos of being outnumbered.

Just writing this is a good reminder for me to come up for air and remember:
The man I said yes to with all my heart…never said a word to me. It was all hand gestures and gazing in each other’s eyes through fog and blood. He’s still a man of few words, but his actions speak loud.

Now you can answer the first 3 questions on the quiz we handed out at our wedding!

I love this! What tops your post is that you say you have to remember to ‘come up for air’….
I got married in Key West. Such a magical place down there. =) Sorry about the bloody nose though. lol

That is incredible! I love that his Grandpa helped him pick out the ring. That is very touching. Also, that he asked you underwater is amazing!

I especially love that his Grandpa was part of the ring shopping too…and on the flip side, I took my mom and Aunties with me!

You’re so funny, Stasha. Indeed, some of this stuff is good material for a future book (that I write) or movie (that my husband makes). You just can’t make up the fog and blood!

Oh, my, God —> first off I love hearing anybody’s proposal story. But second of all – underwater! How original and ROMANTIC is that?! But really, good lord – the mask filling up with blood from the nosebleed. It just did me in. I’m still laughing here. No wonder Mama Kat chose this as her fave. It’s hilarious!

I love proposal stories too! I just thought of something though…I can’t believe the blood didn’t freak me out given my extreme fear of sharks. Yes, I’m glad there are no sharks in my proposal story :)

I passed your quiz! Does that mean I get a present?

This is one of the most original proposal stories I have ever heard.

Maybe…if you can answer this last question: What the heck did Nana have to talk about for 8 hours straight?!
He definitely gets points for originality!
