Where A Longtime Dream Comes True

by Christine@TheAums on February 15, 2013 · 40 comments

In 2010, I revealed a secret dream that I’ve had for a long time. Here’s the 19-second clip from a video audition I submitted to iVillage.com to become one of their iVoices:

In 2013, that dream has come true…I’m hosting a cooking show for iVillage! This has been months in the making, but reality set in today when the first episode went live. By reality, I mean nervousness, excitement and what have I gotten myself into? disbelief.

My goal is not just to share recipes and menu ideas, but to show how kids can be involved in the cooking process. Whether it’s asking them for ideas or handing them an age-appropriate knife to chop veggies, I hope to inspire other parents to turn meal preparation into quality family time. Of course, things don’t always go smoothly, and I promise to leave in some of that, too.

On that note, check out “How To Make Homemade Tacos and Spanish Rice…With the Kids!”

Behind the scenes: My recipe for Spanish Rice is inspired by my mom. I’ve always tried to perfect her technique which is to just throw a little of this and that together, no measuring, and yet, it comes out perfect every time. How does she do that?! After much trial and error- seriously, I’ve been trying since college- I’ve finally figured out the exact measurements that turn out delicious Spanish rice every time.

This is a whole new chapter in my life’s book and I hope you’ll be a part of it- I can really use the support. Sharing, pinning and constructive feedback are all welcome.

Awesome job! I have a similar recipe except that there’s fresh cilantro and dried oregano.

Congratulations on the show. How exciting!

I love dried oregano…used to eat it out of the palm of my hand as a kid. My husband loves tons of fresh cilantro on anything. They would both be great additions.

My favorite part: “Can you please get the Legos off the table?” A phrase spoken here before every meal. Great recipe- can’t wait to try it!

That’s my favorite part, too…and when it breaks apart…you just can’t make that up! Ah, the chaos of dinnertime.

Dig the first cooking webisode! Can you also do one on Ma’s albondigas, enchiladas and cocido next? LOL! Jost keeding, ma! I think the music should have had more spanish rice in it ;-)

LOL. Yeah, limited choice in music…hopefully you can do some originals for me soon.

Loved this! I watched it with my kids and they loved seeing your kids doing normal stuff like us, like having taco night! We have Taco Tuesdays, makes dinner planning easy. Kees is excited for us to make your rice.

Ps- I also live the Lego comment, something over here, every night it seems.

Also, do you have a wavy cutter for the kids? Mine love using it.

Candi, I’m so happy to hear you watched it with your kids. I was hoping kids would get inspired, too. The Lego part is my favorite- cracks me up every time. And thanks for reminding me about the wavy cutter- I have one tucked in a drawer and will use it on an upcoming episode.
